If the new Tonya Harding biopic has anything, it has a filthy mouth. If Allison Janney’s LaVona Golden, the mother of the controversial figure skater, isn’t calling people the C-word, then Margot Robbie’s skater is telling the competition judges to suck her… you get the idea. So a red band trailer for I, Tonya is perfectly fitting.

Craig Gillespie’s (Lars and the Real Girl) biopic stars Robbie as the ‘90s figure skater, most known for the infamous Nancy Kerrigan knee-bashing incident. The first full trailer is a fantastic one, teasing the film’s darkly comedic tone, its breaking-the-fourth-wall Goodfellas vibe, and yes, it does show a couple quick glimpses of the knee-whacking. It pretty accurately captures the film’s risky tone, one that’s already proven divisive among critics – I loved the film and you can read my review here, but you’ll find a handful of critics disagreeing with its biting satire. The red band trailer does spoil a few climactic moments and humorous bits (if you want to be taken by total surprise, maybe skip it), but I also implore you to watch it for the stellar Janney, who more than deserves an Oscar nomination for her acerbic mother.

And if you’re not one for profanity, here’s the official green band trailer:

Here’s the full official synopsis:

Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, Tonya is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked––and checkered––glory.

I, Tonya will hit theaters on December 8, just in time for awards seasons consideration, and trust me, both Janney and Robbie are worthy of some Oscar love.
